I’m a qualified careers adviser and coach (MA, Warwick University) with a background in scientific research and publishing. A Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, I specialise in providing career development education to doctoral and early career researchers and have been delivering career workshops and one-to-one career coaching for over 20 years in research institutions, universities, EU consortia and DTPs. My training is inclusive and aims to provide a space for informing, reflecting and action-planning in key aspects related to academic and non-academic career planning. As a registered career practitioner with the Career Development Institute and the Association for Graduate Careers Services (AGCAS), my training and coaching services are in compliance with a nationally recognised ethical code of practice.

Dr. Monika Clausen

Self-employed as coach and trainer since 2005 with engagements at universities and for companies. I cover a broad range of topics from women-empowerment activities to transferable skills building engagements (e.g., career planning, application strategies, mentor program design, leadership trainings, and soft skill enrichments) tailor-made for needs of Doctoral students, Postdocs, and Supervisors.
As a coach I aim at self-empowering and extending possible ways to solve career related issues. I work with a mixture of consulting and solution focused coaching approaches. If required, I share knowledge, tips, and tricks to help unfold self-confidence. Independent on whether I am working with an individual or a group we will have a very friendly, pleasant, challenging but also humorous setting

With a taste for exploring the world and all that it offers, and a love of understanding a little better how its people find their way, I bring it all together to help people figure out that gnarly question asked of historians, physicists, biologists and philosophers: sure it’s fascinating, but what’ll you do with that PhD?

I build on my knowledge and experience to advise, train and coach doctoral candidates and postdocs on their career path. I lead and develop professional training programmes with an eye to the tools a PhD needs and how best they’ll learn. And because the learning is never done, I continue to research, manage and analyse the qualitative and quantitative data, building effective advice based on real practice.

I am committed and passionate for furthering Academic Development as a profession that intersects with current educational standards and teachers real concerns.

Being exposed to a variety of academic cultures I grew a particular interest in understanding learning and its behavior taking into consideration how learning may be influenced by external and societal factors.

I have a PhD in Social Psychology, London School of Economics, 2001. Thesis title: ‘Social Representations of Human Rights: the case of the patrona-muchacha relationship’. A look inside the private life of women in Mexican middle-class urban households.

I volunteered for many causes, such as for the Indo-American Refugee and Migrant Organization (IRMO), in London and Amnesty International.
